Options P&L isn’t linear. It’s shaped by your strike price, premium and breakeven. The examples below are three quick scenarios showing how strategy choice shapes outcomes.
Max loss, max profit and breakeven
Max loss
The most you can lose on the trade.
- Buyers: premium paid
- Sellers: significant or unlimited, depending on the strategy
Max profit
The most you can gain on the trade.
- Some strategies are capped
- Others are open-ended
Breakeven
The price where profit equals zero at expiration. Your trade must move beyond this level to make money.
At expiration vs before expiration
- At expiration: the outcome is fixed. The option either has value or expires worthless.
- Before expiration: price moves continuously with the market, and profit and loss fluctuates with it. An option can still hold value even when it’s below breakeven, thanks to remaining time value.
Why this matters
You don’t need to hold an option until expiration. You can close the position at any point before expiration, locking in profits or cutting losses.
Example: Bullish BTC, buy call
| View | BTC price will rise significantly in the near future |
| Strategy | Buy call |
| Strike | 40,000 USD |
| Expiration | 1 month |
| Premium | 2,000 USD |
| Max loss | 2,000 USD |
| Max profit | Unlimited |
| Breakeven | 42,000 USD |
Outcomes at expiration
| BTC finishes | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Above 42,000 USD | Profit (grows as price rises) |
| Between 40,000 and 42,000 USD | Partial loss |
| At or below 40,000 USD | Full loss of premium |
Example: Bullish with capped upside, bull call spread
| View | BTC price will rise moderately |
| Strategy | Bull call spread |
| Structure | Buy 40,000 USD call / Sell 45,000 USD call |
| Net premium paid | 2,000 USD |
| Max loss | 2,000 USD |
| Max profit | 3,000 USD (spread minus net premium) |
| Breakeven | 42,000 USD |
Outcomes at expiration
| BTC finishes | Outcome |
|---|---|
| At or above 45,000 USD | Max profit reached |
| Between 42,000 and 45,000 USD | Partial profit |
| Between 40,000 and 42,000 USD | Partial loss |
| At or below 40,000 USD | Full loss of net premium |
Example: Bearish BTC, buy put
| View | BTC price will fall |
| Strategy | Buy put |
| Strike | 40,000 USD |
| Premium | 1,500 USD |
| Max loss | 1,500 USD |
| Max profit | Increases as price falls |
| Breakeven | 38,500 USD |
Outcomes at expiration
| BTC finishes | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Below 38,500 USD | Profit (grows as price falls) |
| Between 38,500 and 40,000 USD | Partial loss |
| At or above 40,000 USD | Full loss of premium |
